Waterloo To Anywhere
When the Libertines (Britain's addled answer to the Strokes) imploded under the weight of Pete Doherty's tabloid antics, people assumed Carl Barat was headed back to the dole line. But listening to his new band's slash-and-burn debut (the whole thing comes in at just over 30 minutes), it's easy to believe he was actually the one with all the Clash-inspired chops. Of course, it sounds ragged as all hell, but that was half of his old band's charm. Its mumbly, ska-inflected punk songs like "Bang Bang You're Dead" and "The Gentry Cove" really make Doherty seem more useless than ever.
