Waterloo To Anywhere
Dirty Pretty Things, "Waterloo" (Interscope/Vertigo). "Waterloo" is the great Libertines album that never was. Co-leader of that drug-addled British act Carl Barat decided to carry on in the wake of his former partner Pete Doherty's collapse into crack-addicted tabloid fodder. (That was Doherty all over the British broadsheets, cavorting around in alleged cocaine ecstasy with supermodel Kate Moss.) Barat formed Dirty Pretty Things with ex-Cooper Temple Clause chum Didz Hammond and the coherent portion of the Libertines - drummer Gary Powell and guitarist Anthony Rossomando. Together, they kicked out a strong collection of punk-based tunes with all of the teetering-on-the-brink excitement of the Libertines, and none of the half-baked, "we can barely be bothered" slop of Barat's former band. A strong debut from a promising outfit.
