What music are you currently grooving to?
The Charlatans’ Simpatico, one of their best. I saw them play in America not long ago. They’re really on top of their game at the minute. And they wrote a song about me, Hard To Be You (Song for Carl). It’s very touching.
What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album?
With The Beatles, the first Beatles LP I ever had. I would have been about eight and I’ve been in love with it ever since. But then right up there with it is Loaded, by the Velvet Underground. They were the soundtracks of my life.
What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?
Technically, the first record I ever bought was a New Kids on the Block one for my sister’s birthday. But then I bought (sings) “What do you want to make those eyes at me for / If they don’t mean what they say?” by Emile Ford and the Checkmates, from a jumble sale run by old ladies and cub scouts in Whitchurch Parish Hall for 20p. I love that record.
Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be?
Jim Morrison - well I used to but then I grew out of that. Maybe Mozart, I’d get to be a genius and go round telling everyone how clever I am.
What do you sing in the shower?
Songs from Bugsy Malone occasionally.
What is your favourite Saturday night record?
Something by Rage Against the Machine or maybe The Prodigy. I couldn’t avoid those bands as a kid. I saw them both live at the Reading Festival, they were amazing, just really powerful.
And your Sunday morning record?
It’s not a very imaginative choice, but Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground. It makes me feel like I have all the time in the world. Then I’d play The Doors’ Love Street in the afternoon and maybe some Stranglers as well.
